Jan works mainly in white stoneware
clay fired in an electric kiln. A combination of techniques are used
such as slabbing, throwing, press and sprigg moulding with an emphasis on
textured, stamped and carved surfaces. Her work can be decorative, functional
or sculptural. Inspiration comes from the natural environment, particularly
the “ebb and flow” of the sea and the effect it has on the sandscape,
which also introduces the element of time and movement to her pieces.
Driftwood and copper have been introduced into some work, reflecting a growing
interest in the possibilities of combining natural and manmade materials.
